The Quadrantids will be the first major Meteor shower of 2014. They are due to be at their peak between January 2nd and January 3rd thanks to ideal viewing conditions in the Northern Hemisphere, created by the new moon on January 1st. The best time to view this beautiful phenomenon, with be sometime between nightfall and just before dawn.
You will not need a telescope to view the shower, they can easily be seen by the naked eye, you just need to make sure that you are out of the city ..somewhere where the light pollution is low. I expect I will be plonking myself down on top of a hill close by my home, with a thermal of hot chocolate and a blanket. I’ll let you know how it goes. Good luck to anybody who looks up to the skies on the 2nd/3rd.
