Comic Book Day (16.07.14)

If you’re searching for a new comic book to sink your teeth into, look no further. Loads of brand new comic series have been released today and I’ve compiled a list of my favourites. These first issues mean that you’re not missing out on any previous story line, so check them out if you’re looking for a new story, and want to expand your comic collection.

Harley Quinn Invades Comic-Con International : San Diego
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Amanda Conner et al.
Artist: Paul Pope et al.

The title says it all! Our favorite little troublemaker, Harley Quinn, takes on Comic-Con International: San Diego in this over the top issue! She’ll have to battle long lines, crazy crowds and the dreaded con crud, all in the quest to get her own comic book published

It’s only a one shot comic, but being a Harley Quinn fan, it had to be on my list. It’s been created by the team who are currently writing/ illustrating Harley’s own New 52 comic series, so you know the art work and storyline is going to be spot on. Plus, I had a quick look at the preview pages for this issue, and it’s worth getting purely to see Harley’s comic book creation – a woman who has deadly vomit.

Aphrodite IX/Cyber Force
Publisher: Top Cow Productions
Writer: Matt Hawkins
Artist: Stjepan Sejic

A double sized crossover event unlike any before! Two teams, seven centuries apart, united by one woman’s diabolical plan. The Chairwoman from Cyber Force and Aphrodite IX had a plan to recreate the world in her children’s image. Things didn’t go as planned. Featuring the present day team of Cyber Force and the 28th century Aphrodite IX, this story lays the origins of new comic series IXth Generation launching in 2015

I’ve never read any Cyber Force comics, or Aphrodite IX comics; in fact, I’ve never even heard of either, but having read the first 5 or so pages from this upcoming series, I have come to the conclusion that I need it in my life. Aphrodite looks badass ..all the characters look badass – I can’t wait to read more about them. Plus, the artwork is absolutely stunning. Stjepan Sejic is an incredibly talented artist. Having seen his work in some of the Grimm Fairytale comics, and now this, he is officially one of my favorites.

Infinite Crisis: The Fight for the Multiverse
Publisher: DC Comics
Writer: Dan Abnett
Artist: Carl Potts et al.

In the tradition of INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US, a new video game sensation makes its comics debut. Developed by Turbine and WBIE Games, INFINITE CRISIS brings together unique versions of DC Universe heroes from across the multiverse to head off a crisis that threatens to destroy all of their worlds! Heroes and villains from Gaslight, Atomic, Arcane, Mecha and other worlds battle and join forces with Prime Earth Batman in this rapidly escalating conflict

I am still yet to play Injustice: Gods Among Us. It’s high on my ‘next game to play’ list, but I just know I’ll get addicted and end up becoming an obsessed, smelly, jobless bum. For this reason, I’m incredibly excited to get my hands on Infinite Crisis. It means I get all of the storyline, but none of the frustrating gaming – and what a storyline it is. Heroes AND villains join forces ..can you imagine that? Batman and the Joker holding hands!

Borderlands: The Fall of Fyrestone
Publisher: IDW
Writer: Mikey Neumann
Artist: Agustin Padilla

The epic story of Borderlands continues in part one of the new series, where fans find out what happens after Roland, Mordecai, Lilith, and Brick step out of Marcus’s bus. As soon as they arrive in the once-prosperous town of Fyrestone, they realize that Pandora is a far more dangerous planet than they first imagined. The Vault Hunters will go up against a ruthless bandit known as “Nine Toes,” but will they be able to overcome him?

Another video game related comic. I’ve played through the first Borderlands, and recently bought the second in an Xbox sale. It’s such a massive game and I’m still nowhere near completion, but I love it. The humor throughout is right up my street, so I can picture the comic series being just as hilarious – it is written by Mikey Neumann after all. (He wrote the game for those of you that don’t know)

Black Market
Publisher: Boom! Studios
Writer: Frank J. Barbiere
Artist: Victor Santos

Ray Willis is a broken man, a disgraced medical examiner making ends meet by preparing corpses at a funeral parlor. His scientific genius is being wasted…that is, until his estranged criminal brother Denny shows up on his doorstep, supposedly cleaned-up and proposing a once-in-a-lifetime partnership to cure not just cancer, but all disease. The catch? It exists within the DNA of superheroes

What an amazing idea for a story line. Black Market is only a four part mini-series, but it really does have the potential to be great. From what I gather, this Superhero comic’s main characters aren’t going to be the heroes, but the ‘villains’. I mean, I use that term lightly, because they’re doing what they think is right – but you can’t just go around stealing Superhero DNA.

The X-Files: Year Zero
Publisher: IDW
Writer: Karl Kesel
Artist: Greg Scott and Vic Malhotra

When a blue-collar worker from New Jersey passes prophetic messages to the FBI from a mysterious “Mr. Zero,” Mulder is convinced it is the same otherworldly entity that contacted the FBI through a suburban housewife in the 1940s. This similarly named “Mr. Xero” pointed the FBI toward many unusual cases, leading to the establishment of “the X-Files”!

It has been years since I’ve watched an episode of the X-Files. I have so many memories of that series; it’s such a nostalgic franchise for me. Now Mulder and Sully are back after all this time – I can’t not check out this 5 part series.

Other new comics out this week:

Army of Darkness: Ash gets Hitched – Dynamite Entertainment
Lady Zorro – Dynamite Entertainment
The Devilers – Dynamite Entertainment
The Last Fall – IDW
The Squidder – IDW
Doberman – IDW
Owlgirls – Red Anvil Comics
