Top 10 | Best of 2014

2014 has been a huge year with regards to movie and television releases. Marvel and DC have both had some big announcements, and it is clear there is so much to look forward to. There have also been great achievements in the Space and Gaming communities, as well as some iconic moments that will stick in my mind for eternity. Here is a list of my top 10 of 2014 with regards to the nerdy universe I hold so dear.

10. Space

2014 has been an exceptional year for space exploration, and one of the most exciting missions in my personal opinion was Rosetta; the landing of European robot, Philae, onto a moving comet. There was also huge excitement when the Orion spacecraft managed to orbit the earth twice, and successfully land in the Pacific Ocean. Finally, the continued success of the Mars Curiosity Rover suggests that the red planet may in fact be habitable in the future.

9. DC/Marvel TV Shows

With the success of television series, Arrow, DC has massively expanded their line-up this year by releasing even more shows. Series’ based on The Flash, Constantine, and Batman’s Gotham have been a huge success, and have meant that even more series will be produced in the future; Supergirl, Krypton and Preacher to name a few.

Marvel isn’t letting DC have all the fun however. Agent Carter has just premiered, and four other series based on the heroes; Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, have been announced. These are being produced in conjunction with Netflix and will result in a Miniseries called the Defenders.

8. Telltale Games

One of my 2014 highlights on the gaming front has come in the form of a company called Telltale Games. They have been increasingly busy this year, releasing the final episodes for The Wolf Among Us and The Walking Dead, as well as brand new episodes for Tales from the Borderlands, and Game of Thrones. They have also announced Minecraft: Story Mode, which they will be releasing next year in conjunction with Mojang.

7. The Purple Wedding

Last year, the iconic Red Wedding scene from the Game of Thrones series made my list of 2013’s best moments. This year, it was all about the Purple Wedding. Rather than characters I actually like, being brutally murdered, the Purple Wedding saw the death of menace Joffrey. For those who hadn’t read the books, it was a completely unexpected event ..albeit, one that was met with cheers and rejoice.

6. The Death of Wolverine

One of the more upsetting events of 2014 came when Wolverine passed away in the four part comic series; Death of Wolverine. Wolverine has never been one of my favourite characters, but he’s always been there, and I guess I just took that for granted. Unfortunately, it seemed that his time had come, and as prepared as I was, I still found myself deeply saddened when I read the comics leading up to his death.

5. The Walking Dead

Another rather sad moment for the nerdy community came when Beth died in the Walking Dead series. I’m not going to go into details because I’ve already revealed a massive spoiler and don’t intend to ruin anymore of the storyline for anyone who hasn’t seen the show yet, but believe me, I was sobbing uncontrollably so make sure you have tissues.

4. The Battle of Five Armies

I finally got to see the last movie in the Hobbit Trilogy, and penultimate movie in the Lord of the Rings franchise. Having been waiting for this moment since An Unexpected Journey back in 2012, a lot was riding on this film and it did not disappoint. It turned out to be one of my favourite movies of 2014, and was definitely my favourite out of the Hobbit trilogy. I can’t wait until the director cuts are released on DVD so that I can have a 24 hour LOTR marathon.

3. DC/Marvel Movie Announcements

Television Show announcements weren’t the only highlight of 2014 – both Marvel and DC produced rather hefty lists of their upcoming movies. The lists span over the next 5 years, with some titles expected and some a complete surprise. With these announced movies, came a huge list of confirmed cast for a lot of beloved characters – this has brought a fair bit of scepticism but overall I’m very excited.

So what can you expect? Well DCs list consists of 10 movies, which include The Justice League, Shazam, Green Lantern, Suicide Squad, and of course Batman V Superman. Marvel have gone one step further, and are producing over 20 movies. Most of these are sequels, so were pretty anticipated (Avengers, Captain America, X-Men) but there were some unexpected film announcements as well, such as Sinister Six, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Deadpool.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy

GOTG was THE movie of 2014. Nearly everyone I talk to claim that this was their favourite film of the year, and I’m inclined to agree. It had everything – action, humour, lovey dovey scenes, and cute cuddly creatures, but the main reason I loved it – it was just so unexpected. Very few people had heard of the Guardians before this film, so the storyline was completely new, which made it incredibly exciting. The cast was also perfect ..and when I say cast, I mean Chris Pratt.

1. Star Wars Teaser Trailer

If you still haven’t seen the trailer for the new Star Wars movie, then you have missed out on being a part of the most important event in 2014. I have a feeling that this teaser had to be the single most anticipated trailer of all time. Adults everywhere dropped what they were doing and had a nostalgic overload in unison as the Millennium Falcon popped into the screen. There have been both positive and negative responses to what was seen, but there is no denying that it was the most talked about video for a long time.
