Han Solo Loses its Directors Mid-Filming

It wasn’t long ago that we were getting hyped up about the rumour of the new Star Wars spin-off’s name, and now we’re saying goodbye to its two directors; Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – creators of The Lego Movie, and directors of 21 Jump Street.

Lord and Miller have been filming the Han Solo, Star Wars prequel since early 2017, but with a few weeks of filming left to go, have announced that they will be leaving the project.

According to Lucasfilms’ president, Kathleen Kennedy, their departure was due to creative differences, which seems to happen a lot these days – Ant Man comes to mind. Here’s her official statement:

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are talented filmmakers who have assembled an incredible cast and crew, but it’s become clear that we had different creative visions on this film, and we’ve decided to part ways. A new director will be announced soon.

Lucasfilms have assured fans that the movie remains on schedule, with a May 2018 release date – though this will be slightly more convincing when a new director is found. I’m sure I’m not the only one who was hoping to see some sort of teaser in the upcoming months.

So who could take over director duties? Well, rumors are going around that Ron Howard may continue with Han Solo. He’s no stranger to epic space movies, with Apollo 13 under his belt. There’s also speculation that Lawrence Kasdan may direct. As co-writer of the Han Solo script, he’s definitely very familiar with the movie, but he’s not quite as renowned for his directing abilities.

Who do you think will make a good director for the Star Wars spin-off?

Villains Need Love Too

If you’re struggling through Monday as much as I am, you might appreciate these illustrations by artist Nacho Diaz – they’ve certainly made my week a hell of a lot better. Depicting heroes hugging their evil counterpart / misunderstood frenemies – depending on which way your moral compass points, these pictures are beyond cute.

Diaz’s collection is aptly named Villains need love too, and include the likes of Batman and the Joker, Harry and Voldemort, Han Solo and Jabba, and my favourite – Deadpool and.. Deadpool. You can see my favourites below, but if you need more cute in your life, check the rest out here. Which one’s your favourite?

Solo: A Star Wars Story

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side kid – Han Solo

Someone posted a picture of their crew shirt up on Reddit, and it’s possible they revealed the name of the upcoming Han Solo spin-off.

Granted, Solo isn’t all that inventive, but I really like the logo, replacing the L with Han’s iconic blaster.

Of course, this could just be a working title. The film’s official name is yet to be revealed, but with filming underway, i’d like to think they’ll release something soon.

Still, for now, it’s nice to get confirmation that something’s actually being filmed. This Han Solo spin-off has gone straight to the top of my most anticipated list, especially with Donald Glover confirmed as Lando.

Five New Comics Hitting The Shelves This Week

Misfit City

Writer: Kiwi Smith

: Naomi Franquiz

: Boom studios

Nothing’s happened in Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in the 80s…but that’s ancient history. Until one day, she and her friends come upon a centuries-old pirate map drawn by someone named Black Mary…and find out there might be some REAL adventure in their tiny town after all!

Misfit City looks to be 2017’s answer to those great, imaginative adventure movies we got to watch as kids – you know, The Goonies / ET. Only this time, picture a kick ass team of girls – it’s not just straight white boys who yearn for adventure. If you like Lumberjanes and Goldie Vance, you need to check out Misfit City. Plus, the comic has been written by the queen of girl power movies, Kiwi Smith, who wrote the likes of 10 Things I Hate About You, Legally Blonde, and The House Bunny.

Writer: Al Ewing

: Adam Gorham

: Marvel

It’s a dirty universe out there, even when you’re not regularly mistaken for trash-foraging vermin. And it’s about to get dirtier. He thought his paws were clean, that he was on the up-and-up. But then an old flame swam back into his life, and he was back in the game… the heist game. If you need a safe cracked, a vault busted or a score taken…ask for Rocket. Just don’t call him a raccoon.

We’re all familiar with the cheeky Raccoon that has been gracing our screens recently with the Guardians of the Galaxy, but we’ve only glimpsed his villainous side. Rocket will explore his life of crime in more detail, so if you’re a big fan of the rodent, you need to check this out. The comic is penned by Marvel alum Al Ewing who has written Mighty Avengers and Loki: Agent of Asgard.

Bug: The Adventures of Forager

Writer: Lee Allred

: Michael Allred

: DC Comics

Forager is just one of the Hive before he breaks out of his cocoon and finds himself in a mysterious house in an unknown realm. There he meets all kinds of strange creatures: a ghostly girl, a talking teddy bear and otherworldly weirdos that have literally jumped out of his worst nightmares. But these interdimensional oddballs are nothing compared to the evil General Electric, who is on the hunt for a reality-bending metal that could alter the fabric of life itself. To stay one step ahead of him and preserve the multiverse, Forager must travel through alternate dimensions to seek the metal and, hopefully, catch up with that cagey stuffed bear. If he does it, will he finally be able to distinguish himself as a New God?

Bug is DC’s latest tribute to Jack Kirby for his centenary. Written and drawn by ‘the first family of comics’; Eisner Award winning brothers Lee and Michael, Bug will give you a closer look at some of the more obscure characters from the DC Universe. If you’re looking for something strange but wonderful, and full of colour, this comic needs to be on top of your to buy list this week.

Star Wars: The Screaming Citadel

Writer: Kieron Gillen

: Marco Checchetto

: Marvel

Rebel pilot and rogue archaeologist wander side by side into the darkest shadows of the galaxy as Luke Skywalker reluctantly teams up with Doctor Aphra! The Doctor makes Luke an offer he can’t afford to pass up, one that leads him to a very rare gathering at the heart of the infamous Screaming Citadel. Will Luke find what he’s looking for? Can Aphra be trusted? Or will they both wind up victims of the Citadel’s Queen?

The Screaming Citadel is a crossover between Kieron’s Doctor Aphra series and Jason Aaron’s Star Wars – joining all the characters from both to form a new gothic-horror story. Expect to see the likes of Han and Leia, along with a host of new characters. If you’re a fan of the original trilogy and want to explore the characters a little more, make sure you check this out.

Ghostbusters: Funko Universe

An ancient Japanese prophecy foretold that when the Masters of the Four Winds unite, they would become unstoppable. Instead, the four masters killed each other in battle, proving the prophecy false. More than 600-years later, an ancient shuriken is unearthed, releasing the spirit of one of the masters to seek out and resurrect the other three in order to fulfill the prophecy. Now, the only thing that stands between the undead ninja and the destruction of the land of the living is… the Ghostbusters!

It’s impossible not to love Funko’s Pop Vinyl figures, with their oversized heads and big beady eyes. Now, Funko and IDW are joining forces to bring a us a comic FULL of the adorable toys. If you’re in need of a cute fix, make sure you pick up this one shot.

Star Wars Celebration Pop! Vinyls

For those lucky enough to attend Orlando’s Star Wars Celebration next month – you’re in for a surprise from Funko.

Funko, who have just announced their new line of Pop Vinyls. The collection includes characters from the original trilogy, as well as the prequels AND Force Awakens. There are even a couple from Star Wars Rebels – Grand Admiral Thrawn being my favourite.

There will be 12 exclusives in total, including Hoth Princess Leia, Hooded Luke, and Han Solo. There will also be a holographic Qui Gon Jinn – which looks fricking awesome – and a Rey figure that comes with her very own Speeder.

Unfortunately, as exclusives, most of these will only be available at the event, so if you know someone who’s going, get them to grab your favourites – and pick up a few for me yeah? Alternatively, wait until May when a few of the figures are rumoured to hit stores such as Target and Hot Topic.

Check the whole collection out below:

What do you think of Funko’s new figures? Which one’s your favourite? Will you be adding any to your wish list?

Meet Cute by Nan Lawson

Did you guys have a nice Valentine’s Day? I hope you all managed to do something special with your loved ones – if that included going to see Deadpool, you definitely did Saint Valentine proud.

Seen as love is still fresh on everyone’s mind, I thought I’d show you this lovely collection of prints created by Nan Lawson. The series is called ‘Meet Cute’ and depicts iconic couples from an array of different pop culture franchises, stood back to back with dewy faces and wide eyes.

Hearing the term Meet Cute automatically reminds me of that scene in The Holiday where adorable Arthur explains what it means; “It’s how two characters meet in a movie. Say a man and a woman both need something to sleep in, and they both go to the same men’s pajama department. And the man says to the salesman: ‘I just need bottoms’. The woman says: ‘I just need a top’. They look at each other, and that’s the meet cute”

Lawson’s interpretation of this is definitely on point. Even though the couples aren’t face to face, there’s something incredibly romantic about their back to back stance, and the way they seem to merge into each other as if they were slowly becoming one.

She’s managed to include tonnes of my favourite couples; The Doctor and Rose, Scott and Ramona, Zoe and Wash, Captain America and Peggy. She’s even drawn Jareth and Sarah from the Labyrinth which just looks so exquisite. Were any of your favourite couples included? What did you think of Lawson’s artwork?

R2D2 Claptrap Tattoo

How amazing is this tattoo? Seriously, how amazingly is this tattoo? The person that came up with the idea to combine R2D2 from Star Wars and Claptrap from Borderlands is most definitely a genius. They make the most perfect, adorable mash up.

Genius in question? Tattoo Artist Josh Bodwell from Funhouse Tattooing in Tannersville. You can check out more of his work here, but I think we can all agree that clap2D2 is owning the ‘best tattoo ever’ chart at the moment. What do you guys think?

Wee Little Stitches

Whilst having one of my ‘find all the awesome stuff on Etsy’ sessions, I came across a little online store called Weelittlestitches who create little cross stitched works of art. Using a needle and thread has never been something I’ve been particularly good at, so I was instantly impressed that someone had the patience.

I then noticed the nature of the art work and fell in love. Are these not the cutest nerdy pictures ever? Jacqueline and her husband have created images of loads of my favourite fandoms; Star Wars, TMNT, Game of Thrones, Sailor Moon. I kind of just want one of everything. In fact, I want a quilt made out of all of them. Someone make me a quilt?
